Well-being and Involvement

Children’s emotional well-being is of critical importance.  Happy children make happy learners – an important first step to becoming life-long lovers of learning.

High levels of involvement, coupled with high levels of well-being – is the perfect recipe for deep learning and development (https://www.famly.co/blog/leuven-scales, Dr Sue Allingham, 2021).

Well-being is defined as ‘the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy’. Involvement is defined as ‘the fact of being involved with or participating in something’.

Children with a high level of well-being feel great. They enjoy life to the full. Well-being is linked to self-confidence, self-esteem and resilience.  Children with a high level of involvement are highly absorbed by their activity. They show interest, motivation and even fascination.

We use the Leuven Scales in our observations of children to measure their individual levels of well-being and involvement, where 1 is low and 5 is the highest, to see how well the activities are matched to their needs.

We want all of our children to have high levels of well-being and involvement and we will feed back to you about this on a regular basis.  If children have consistently low levels of well-being and involvement their Key Person will talk to parents and plan additional activities for them at nursery, to help improve their well-being and involvement levels.
